Dzibilchaltún

It is considered one of the oldest Mayan cities. It's name means "The place of the writing in flat stone". Beside the archeological site, Dzibilchaltún also offers to the visitors a 16th Century Fransiscan Chapel and a freshwater pool just off the side of the main plaza.

Templo de las Siete Muñecas, the most important in this zone, is an imposing looking building on a pyramidal base with a short tower atop its roof. A monolithic stela stands at its front like a sentinel guarding its entrance. The doorways of the temple were built in exact solar alignment with the rising sun, such that the early rays pass through them on the Spring and Fall equinoxes, marking the beginning of planting season and the beginning of harvest season.

Dzibilchaltun is only 9 miles from Merida in the highway to Progreso. The archeological site has various services to make the visitor comfortable: a restaurant, artisan objects in the gift shop, and tourist information.
