Taking place during the first three weeks of October (from the 3rd to the 21st in this, its 35th edition) the Festival Internacional Cervantino is the most important cultural event in Mexico and Latin America. From 1972, year of its creation, its backdrop has been the city of Guanajuato. Founded in 1546 and declared heritage of the world by the UNESCO, it has received the title of Cervantes capital in America. In honor of don Miguel de Cervantes, the festival originally focused on art produced in the Spanish language, a tradition kept alive by the drama department of the University of Guanajuato.
