Teotitlán del Valle, known for its woven wool rugs with exceptional designs

Wool rugs in this town are made on domestic looms, using natural dyes like indigo, the cochineal seedling and the moss of the stone for their pigmentation. Designs include traditional Zapotec glyphs as well as Navajo designs and reproductions of famous paintings by Picasso, Miró, Matisse, Tamayo and Toledo (this last two are noteworthy artist from Oaxaca).

We recommend a visit to the artisans’ homes. The two main landmarks in the town are the Preciosa Sangre de Cristo Church and the Community Museum. The Preciosa Sangre de Cristo Church, was begun in 1581, inside there are traces of 16th century decoration with pre-Hispanic motifs.

The community museum displays the archeology of the municipality, crafts and the traditional weddings.
