Official Statement – Tropical Storm “Manuel”

Acapulco, Mexico (September 20, 2013) – The Secretary of Tourism in Guerrero, Mexico released the following updates on current conditions in the tourism zones & infrastructure in Acapulco: 

- Traditional Zone – hotels operating normally; roads accessible and safe 
- Golden Zone – hotels operating normally; roads accessible and safe 
- Diamante Zone – hotels operating normally; roads accessible and safe 
- Acapulco Alvarez International Airport – operating. 
- Road Access to Mexico City – tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday September 20th 
- International Convention Center of Acapulco – operating normally 
- Mundo Imperial – operating normally 

Starting today, bus companies will be providing free transportation for travelers from Acapulco to Mexico City. This service is expected to last throughout the weekend. Bus stations are located at the International Convention Center of Acapulco and at Mundo Imperial. 

Additional flights are still operating from the Pie de la Cuesta Air Force Base as an alternative for travelers with priority given to people with urgent medical assistance requirement, women, children and elders at this time. 

Furthermore, a tourism hotline has been set up for transfer information, hotel rooms and other assistance. Travelers can call 01-800-008-8700 directly for more information. 

The Federal and State Government of Guerrero are providing complimentary hotel rooms as needed to all tourists unable to leave the destination due to road closures. The safety and comfort of our visitors remains paramount during this crucial time in Acapulco. 

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, located 150 miles northwest of Acapulco, is operating normally in terms of tourist infrastructure. The International Airport is functioning normally and trying to accommodate all travelers attempting to return home following the storm. The road access to Michoacan State is through freeway as the Siglo XXI Highway is currently being restored, as well as the road between Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Acapulco. 

No damages are being reported in the colonial city of Taxco and roads from Mexico City and State of Mexico to this destination are open and operating normally. Currently, the only road under repair at this time is the highway from Iguala to Taxco.
