BACALAR

Considered a “Magic Town”, it has the second largest lagoon in Mexico (over 37 miles in length) known as “The Lagoon of the Seven Colors”. There is an abundance of wildlife in the surrounding rainforest and beautiful white sandy beaches fringe the lagoon. Fishing, windsurfing, canoeing, water-skiing, rowing, sailing and bird watching are popular activities. In the south end there are wetland channels and a small outlet called Río Chaak. The swimming in this fast current creek is great. One of the main attractions is the San Felipe Fort, built in 1729 to defend the region against pirate raids. During the Caste War, Mayan rebels left it in ruins. San Felipe has been restored and boasts with beautiful gardens, murals, and a museum. The museum open daily from 8:00 to 13:00 hrs.
