Campeche has six Protected Natural Areas


Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, occupying 723,185 hectares, it is the largest tropical nature reserve in Mexico. Several archeological zones are located here.
Petenes  Zone, the Petenes is an island with forests and swamps. With an extension of 282,857 hectares, it houses 473 different flora species.
Términos Lagoon, it has an extension of near 2,667 square miles and is part of a Protected Area. It is surrounded by mangroves with tropical birds, a rich marine life, mammals and reptiles.
“Ría Celestún” Biosphere Reserve, Celestun is one of the biggest swamp areas in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a sanctuary for the Pink Flamencos, turtles and migratory birds.
Balamkin Biosphere Reserve, this area has a great diversity of plant and animal life.
Balam-ku Natural Reserve, it is a natural biological corridor with 409.200 has. The jungle vegetation is the home of 12 species of amphibians, 64 reptiles, 243 birds and 64 mammals. The highlight of the area is the famous bat sancturary.
